8/24/2023 0 Comments Blueprint paper chemical smellThe medieval manuscripts De Hamel was dealing with were created by hand on long-lasting parchment made from animal skins – which also have their own distinctive smell. ![]() As De Hamel points out, “some manuscripts have hardly stirred from their original shelves since the day they were completed others have zig-zagged across the known world in wooden chests or saddle bags, swaying on the backs of horses or over the oceans in little sailing ships, or as aircraft freight.” The life of individual books also affects their smell: how far they have travelled whether they have been kept in damp or dry environments. “We know that books produced before approximately 1850 have a different smell to those produced between 18, and that’s because late 19th- and most 20th-century printing was dominated by acid sizing” – the process to which pulp was subjected to reduce the water-absorbancy of paper, so that it could then be written on. Libraries such as St Paul’s, dedicated to historic books, smell different to those housing more recent literature, says Strlič. ![]() It wasn’t until the arrival of Bembibre – a PhD student with a background in communications – that the project began to acquire an anthropological and cultural breadth. For that, you need a multi-disciplinary study,” he says. “We know very well how to analyse the chemicals, but what they mean, and the emotions they trigger, is a completely different matter. Strlič, a professor of heritage science at UCL, is a chemist by training. The idea is to propose a large theoretical framework of which smells hold cultural value for us as a society,” he says. It’s the way libraries communicate, before people even get to the books but what the books communicate through smell is also interesting. “Librarians have told us that it’s the smell that hits readers first. The project originated in Strlič’s observation of the importance of smell to conservators and librarians. The smell of heritage … researcher Matija Strlič with his nose in a book Photograph: Supplied Everyone described its smell as “woody”, while 86% also experienced it as “smoky”, 71% as “earthy” and just under half (41%) reported the scent of “vanilla” – all smells associated with particular chemicals in old books. In another experiment, they asked visitors to the Wren Library in St Paul’s cathedral to describe what the library smelled like to them. Their study also took them beyond books themselves, to the places in which many of them are read: libraries. “From the analytical perspective, and given that coffee and chocolate come from fermented/roasted natural lignin and cellulose-containing product, they share many VOCs (volatile organic compounds) with decaying paper,” wrote the researchers, who combined the results with those of earlier research projects, such as studies of a 1940s visitors’ book at the National Trust’s Knole House in Kent. “Chocolate”, “cocoa’” or “chocolatey” were the most frequent words used to describe the smell of a copy of French writer Bernard Gasset’s 1928 novel Les Chardons du Baragan, followed by “coffee”, “old”, “wood” and “burnt”. Using fibres from the novel, they produced an “extract of historic book”, which was presented to 79 visitors to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. In a paper published this week in the journal Heritage Science, Cecilia Bembibre and Matija Strlič describe how they analysed samples from an old book, picked up in a second-hand shop, and developed a “historic book odour wheel”, which connects identifiable chemicals with people’s reactions to them. “I have no vocabulary to define this, but there is a curious warm leathery smell to English parchment, unlike the sharper, cooler scent of Italian skins,” wrote the Cambridge University don and librarian Christopher de Hamel in his bestselling Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts.īut that lack of vocabulary could be about to change, thanks to a groundbreaking project by researchers at UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage, who have devised a way of relating such apparently subjective descriptions directly to the chemical composition of books. ![]() ![]() To conservators and historians, smell has always played an important role in assessing the origin and condition of historic books, and in working out how to look after them.

The directory structure in Linux resembles the root of a tree. You may refer to that if you want to know more on this topic. I have explained it in my article on hard links. Even directory is a special kind of file that has the memory address of files and directories inside it. You’ll even find commands like rmdir, mkdir hinting that they deal with directories.Īdditional note: Everything is a file in Linux. However, it is better to use ‘directory’ because this is what you’ll see referenced in various tutorials, documents etc. You can use the term ‘folder’ for the directory, which should be fine. You can go inside the directories but you cannot enter files. You probably know what a file is but you may get confused with the term ‘directory’. The two terms you hear the most in Linux are directory and files. In a multi-user environment, you can easily figure out which user you are using and if it is a root user. Simple information like this helps indirectly. ![]() For regular users, Ubuntu has a different configuration of the prompt than the root. And hence the joke that pound is stronger than dollar.ĭid you notice that when I switched to the root user, the command prompt looked different without any colors? This is another reminder that prompt is not a standard and is configured explicitly. For the root user, it ends with pound or hash (#) symbol. Tilde (~) means the home directory of the present user.įor regular users, the prompt ends with dollar ($) symbol. The colon (:) in the prompt is a separator to distinguish between the hostname and the current location. It’s a term for the interface where you can run and execute commands. Many programming languages have command line interfaces. Every operating system has a command line interface. The Command line is not something specific to Linux. In the Ubuntu terminal, prompt gives you some information which you’ll see in detail in the later sections of this article. In some old terminals, you would just have a blinking cursor to the place where you can type the commands. Prompt is what you see before the space where you type the commands. Often people think that screen they see in the terminal is the shell. The commands you type are interpreted by the shell. Bash is the most popular of them all and the default shell on most Linux distributions. Like terminals, there are various shells as well. They researched storm glass recipes and ordered the appropriate chemicals and laboratory equipment. We’ll make some storm glasses of our own. No problem, said my assistants Una and Fierra. However, no way was I shelling out $179.95. Tomlinson, on the other hand, tested a glass for several months and found it was sensitive only to heat, calling it a “rude thermoscope.” Japanese research from 2008 backs this up, pointing to temperature change as the sole cause of crystal growth. ![]() Fitzroy, meteorologist and captain of HMS Beagle (of Charles Darwin fame), touted the glasses’ accuracy in his Weather Book of 1863. Interest in storm glasses crested in the 1860s, when such scientific notables as Michael Faraday, Robert Fitzroy, and Charles Tomlinson investigated their properties. (The sealed version is standard nowadays, mainly because a whiff of the contents can bowl you over.) In some glasses the contents were exposed to atmospheric pressure via a flexible rubber cap, but other models were hermetically sealed. Early theories held that the chemical blend inside was sensitive to light, heat, wind, atmospheric pressure, or even electrical charge. The inventor of the storm glass is unknown, but descriptions date to the late 18th century. Each supposedly predicts a certain type of weather. The idea is that the mixture is so finely balanced that minor fluctuations in atmospheric conditions will change the solubility of the chemicals and produce a wide variety of crystal shapes, from tiny floating flakes to large masses of feathery fans. Whereas a 25-buck lava lamp, aided by the right combination of tunes and substances, will let you see God.Ī storm glass, also called a weather glass or camphor glass, is a glass tube containing a mixture of ammonium chloride, potassium nitrate, camphor, water, and alcohol, making a normally clear liquid in which different types of white crystals periodically grow and dissolve. "We have a vision for the future that bodes well." That takes a long time to develop, and we've done that. Hoover and SEC baseball has become a hashtag. "We have such a great tradition to say, 'Are you going to make it to Hoover this year?' for the tournament. ![]() "We certainly want to keep it in Hoover," Hall man said. Gene Hallman, president of the Alabama Sports Council, had planned to sit down with SEC commissioner Greg Sankey this summer to talk about making Hoover the long-term home for the baseball tournament like Atlanta has been for the SEC football championship game and Nashville is for the men's basketball tournament, which will be held at Bridgestone Arena every year from 2023-2035. Vincent indicated that the process to determine a home for the baseball tournament beyond 2022 has not begun. The current contract with the Alabama Sports Council to host the event in Hoover was awarded through an open bidding process. "Our members have been pleased with Hoover, especially the expansion they've done," SEC spokesman Herb Vincent said, citing the creation of the Finley Center fan fair space and adjacent ballfields for teams to practice as a "baseball campus" for the tournament. The city spent some $80 in improvements to keep the tournament. Nashville, New Orleans, Memphis and Jacksonville, Fla., all bid in 2016 to lure the SEC Tournament from Hoover, its home since 1998 (and in two prior years, with most previous tournaments held at campus sites). Both schools informed the Big 12 that they will not renew their current grant-of-rights deals (which allow the conference to negotiate television and other media deals involving their contests), which run through 2025. ![]() The SEC voted 14-0 this week to invite the current Big 12 Conference members into the league, and both accepted Friday. Oklahoma City may have an interest in luring the tournament from Hoover when Oklahoma and Texas join the SEC. The SEC's deal to hold the conference tournament at the former minor league stadium in Hoover, Alabama, was extended for two years in 2019 to take it through 2021. That would have made the tournament in May of this year the final one under the current deal, but the league added a year because no event was held in 2020 due to the season being halted by COVID-19. The SEC Baseball Tournament will be played at the Hoover Met in 2022, but the event's location after next season is up in the air. |
